Fellow Nigerian Youths,
The Department of Theatre and Performing Arts, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria has over the last few years attempted through some of its academic programmes to give an expression to the diversified cultural heritage of Nigeria through a carnival. These courses premised on the principles of team work, collective responsibility provides a platform for students to appreciate the society, discover and explore their creative potentials as well as the ability to promote their products. This academic session the process has led students to discover that ABU is a cosmopolitan university which reflects the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria, especially since the amalgamation (1914).
It is in this context that the students have decided to come up with an idea to carry out an elaborate Carnival with the theme “YOUTHS AS PEACE BUILDERS”. The proposed Peace Carnival showcasing the uniquely rich cultural diversity in Nigeria and ABU is another window to create an enduring platform for the promotion of unity, peace, social cohesion and national integration as well as shore up the country’s development and socio-economic growth. The carnival while celebrating the cosmopolitan vision of the founding fathers of Nigeria and especially Ahmadu Bello University, will emphasize the roles of national icons in building bridges and fostering national integration.
Furthermore the carnival will culminate in a Peace Public Lecture and the launching of ABU Peace Club/ Peace Garden. The garden will not only be a symbol for peace in the University community, but is intended to provide a serene and secure space for students to engage in their academic pursuits and calm down tension. The students are convinced that this initiative will compliment the efforts to bring about dialogue between different cultures with a view of to encourage “Peace, Unity and Development” in Kaduna State and Country at large in view of the current security challenges facing the country as well as reduce crime and violence to the barest minimum. This will also compliment efforts to make ABU the largest green institution in the Savannah.
It is against this background that I humbly write to request the distinguished presence of Nigerian youths for the Occassion at Mamman Katongora Square, Main Campus, Samaru - Zaria on the 31st of July, 2014 by 12noon.
I will appreciate your presence, which will immensely boost the morale of these young minds towards realizing such noble dream and objectives. It is my belief that this carnival would be of immense benefit to further project the dreams of our founding fathers to build an integrated society on enduring universal principles and also shore-up efforts to build a peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria.
Thank you in anticipation for your support.
